James Nix describes himself as a visual storyteller. He tries to find the story in everything, learning about people, who they are and how they live. Nix loves learning; although he is an award-winning photojournalist, his humble nature and meticulous work ethic cause him to continually want to foster his craft. You can often find him hunched over his Mac learning video editing software, website development programs, or communicating with other experts in the field. His quest for learning started in college during his time as the Editor-in-Chief of The Appalachian, Appalachian State University’s student newspaper. This is where he picked up his first camera—and he hasn’t put it down since.
Nix was named Hugh Morton Photographer of the Year award from the North Carolina Press Association in 2012 and 2010. Currently, he is a photojournalist at the Independent Tribune, a Concord, NC-based newspaper. Prior to the Independent Tribune, Nix was a staff photographer at The Brunswick News in coastal Georgia.
Nix is also a co-founder and the creative director of Modern Film Fest, an annual independent film festival at the historic Gem Theatre in Kannapolis. Since its inception in 2009, Modern Film Fest had brought an array of unique films and filmmakers to an ever changing community.
Nix is available for a wide range of opportunities, including editorial work, wedding photography and business photography.
